Are you getting free Starz premium movie channels as part of a year-long DISH Network promotion? Worried that the current lawsuit by Starz will lead to you paying for it? Don’t worry; you can still watch them for free.
According to Reuters on Friday a federal judge denied Walt Disney’s bid to prevent DISH Network from including Disney movies such as Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland in the DISH Network 2011 offer. The judge, however, did not explain why he was declining Disney’s request for a ban.
Last month Disney had filed a copyright infringement suit against DISH Network, saying DISH has “devalued” its movies by including them in a promotional giveaway offer. As part of its 30th anniversary, DISH Network has offered Starz movie channels for free for one year. The free offer began in February and will last until February 2012 for all DISH Network customers.
In last May DISH Network has said its contract with Starz permits it to do so stating, “DISH Network pays hundreds of millions of dollars for the right to distribute Starz content to our customers, which includes the rights to a number of Disney movies.”
Disney said that Starz only has permission to broadcast its films if TV providers carried the channel as a premium channel. Starz also joined Disney in the battle by filing a different lawsuit against DISH Network, urging the satellite TV provider to stop the free promotional offer. That lawsuit, however, is still pending.
